Martin Scorsese, the 74-years-old Academy Award director, turned Shūsaku Endō’s 1966 acclaimed novel about the persecution of Christians in 17th-century Japan into a film, addressing issues of faith and doubt.
Rev Dr Louie briefly highlighted the plot of the film and raised several points of reflection with the audience. What is the image of Jesus Christ when the Christians or a priest is asked to step on a fumi-e (a crudely carved image of Christ)? Can faith transcend from culture? Who is the real hero or the strongest one towards faith, the martyr or the apostate due to love? The movie may reflect the theology of both the director and the original writer, leaving a consistent restless passion. |
