A total of 14 music students from the degree programmes of BEd, BME, BA(CAC) and DD-BA(CAC) & BEd(MU) participated in this exchange programme. The key learning activity was the participation of the 20th Congress of the International Musicological Society (IMS) conducted at the Tokyo University of the Arts. All students were required to attend at least two paper panels on each of the conference day from 19 to 23 March 2017. They were also required to attend at least three concerts organized by the IMS during the conference period, including the opening concert on Japanese gagaku (court music) performed at the Tokyo University of the Arts, and the lecture-demonstration on Japanese Buddhist chants and historical Japanese tōgaku (Tang music) delivered at the Ueno Gakuen University. In addition to joining the conference, students attended a taiko (Japanese drum) lesson taught by Japanese musicians at a local cultural center, as well as an exchange session with the local students at Japan Women's University, where our students sang and performed together with the Japanese and foreign students. Each students had to submit verbal and written reflection reports on the activities in which they participated during the immersion period.
