Large-scale Production of Human Epidermal Growth Factor (hEGF)

Growing evidence that hEGF may be used to accelerate the healing of epithelial tissues has created demands for a cost-effective process to produce the polypeptide.

Dr W. K. Wong

Eureka hEGF product

Using recombinant DNA technology, Dr. W. K. Wong from Biochemistry department at HKUST has successfully used Escherichia coli for production of hEGF at high levels.

The hEGF product has recently been applied for cosmetic applications.

One-Minute Test on Heart Attack

Professor Reinhard Rennebery from Chemistry department at HKUST has developed a quick and simple test for heart attack that takes only one minute.

This is expected to save thousands of lives a year in Hong Kong because it gives almost immediate indication to the doctor on whether the patient has had a heart attack, and helps the doctor decide what course of treatment to take.

This was achieved with assistance from EY Laboratories, Inc. as well as Prof. John Sanderson of the CUHK who carried out tests at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Anti-Oxidant TCM

Dr. Robert K. M. Ko from Biochemistry department at HKUST has led to the isolation of the active ingredient in a Chinese herb believed to provide protection against coronary heart disease and possibly retard the aging process.

Chinese medicine

Chinese herbs

These research findings led to an agreement between the Hong Kong-based Lee Kum Kee Group and HKUST in May 1996 and the establishment of the Hong Kong Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Center at HKUST.

This Center will collaborate on developing health food products from Chinese herbs and standardizing procedures for quality control.
