Hong Kong Children's Choir

1. WHY – your vision, objectives in engaging the community; what do you want to achieve?

The Mission Statement of The Hong Kong Children’s Choir says it all – “By providing a team of distinguished and caring instructors who share the same vision, and through choral and other training in a conducive environment, HKCC strives to develop children's artistic talents, their creativity and interests in arts, as well as to develop their inter-personal skills and cultivate their sensitivity to appreciate culture and the virtues of excellence.”

Founded in 1969 as a registered non-profit-making charitable organization, HKCC has long been striving to allow our choir members to develop their artistic talents, and to learn the importance of team spirit through interesting and well organized practices.

2. WHAT – through what means and activities you try to realize your objectives?

HKCC actively participates in local charitable events every year. The Choir itself also organizes numerous concerts and performances each year for our members to share our love of arts with the public and community. During the preparation process of each performance, our members can have a whole new experience which is totally different from their weekly singing practice.

Apart from local events, HKCC is also invited to perform overseas each year, spreading the message of love and peace in different parts of the world. We have also collaborated with world’s renowned musicians and organizations. As the children’s choir that best represents Hong Kong, HKCC took part in many historical moments as well. All of the above events allow HKCC to gain international and local reputation – so as to attract more members to join us.

3. HOW – key to success, innovative ways?

We must keep abreast of changes in the field. Being the biggest choir in the world with over 5,000 members, HKCC continues to strive in widening its repertoire as well as performance genre. In order to keep learning and updating ourselves, we tour aboard every year to explore the world and exchange with choirs and conductors from different backgrounds.

4. What is/ are your methods to evaluate the events’ achievements/ outcomes?

Communication is the most important and effective way to do such evaluation.
Before participating in any events, we discuss with the organizer very thoroughly about the details of the event, including its background, theme, target audience, whether it is charitable, and so on.

After a performance, we talk and listen to the audience, the performers (including tutors and choir members), and the backstage staff. If it comes to a huge event we also do some news clipping – as a second hand resource to know the response from the audience.

We also hold meetings before and after each of the performance organized by ourselves. Participating staff could feel free to express their opinions or the opinions they collected from the others about the event. This allows us to learn from mistakes and do a better job next time.

5. What insights you derived and/ or lessons learned from your engagement with the community?

Parents all over the world would do their best to give their children good education and great opportunities. However, not all families could afford to let their children to develop their artistic talent, which is always of lower priority when compared with academic development. In view of this, The Hong Kong Children’s Choir envisages making a contribution by offering a Scholarship to student in need. What we would like to achieve is to offer help to children who have musical talent but lack training and developmental opportunities. We are confident that we can provide them with an excellent environment for cultivation of artistic talent.
