Organizer - Hong Kong Institute of Education

The HKIEd is a leading teacher education institution in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Teacher education in Hong Kong has a long history, since the first dedicated college started in 1939. The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) was formally established by statute in April 1994.

The HKIEd formally came under the aegis of the University Grants Committee in January 1997 and it was relocated to a new purpose-built campus in Tai Po in the same year. The Institute plays a key role in helping the Hong Kong Government fulfil its commitments: to curriculum reform; to achieve its goal of an 'all graduate all trained' teaching profession; and to provide for the continuous professional development of all serving teachers.

To cultivate an environment which allows teachers to develop as both individuals and caring professionals, we provide our students with a formal curriculum, which stresses the integration of theory and practice, and an informal curriculum, which provides extensive opportunities for community service, involvement in sports, personal development and experience overseas. We also collaborate with other tertiary institutions locally and overseas and have a network of partnerships with local schools.

Since its establishment in 1994, the Hong Kong Institute of Education has seen phenomenal growth. Of the eight University Grants Committee funded institutions, the Institute is the only one dedicated solely to teacher education.

As Hong Kong transforms itself into a knowledge-based society where the quality of the entire population is key to success, the Hong Kong Institute of Education is embracing the challenge of nurturing a new generation of teachers. The new breed of creative, energetic and determined teachers will be serving over 2,100 early childhood, primary, secondary and special education schools.

The Hong Kong Institute of Education is a unique place providing quality teacher education to future teachers who will become change agents in schools and bring the ongoing education reform to new heights.

Vision

By the early 21st century, the Hong Kong Institute of Education will become a leading university-level institution in the Asia Pacific, best known for raising the status and quality of education.
