Research Seminar by Prof NAKAYAMA Shoji

You are cordially invited to participate in the Research Seminar by the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES).

John F. Kennedy, US President stated ‘Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future’ in his letter to Unicef. It is our responsibility to secure healthy environment in which children grow. In the past several decades, the environment has rapidly changed by human activities, resulting in a sharp increase in certain children’s health problems. Such includes a surge in the number of children who suffer from developmental disorder as well as immune alteration and allergy. Prevalence of obesity among children is also on the rise. Reproductive ability tends to have dropped, causing more couples demand reproductive treatments.

Recent environmental health research including epidemiologic studies have focused on the impact of chemical exposure on children’s health and development. There are currently hundreds of thousands of chemical substances registered by regulatory agencies, of which around 10,000 are of our daily use. Some of the chemicals are known to pose detrimental effects on children’s health. Chemicals have made our lives safe and convenient. Sanitation has been dramatically improved thanks to the chemicals. However, the same chemicals pose threat to our, especially children’s, health. The lecture will provide the state-of-the-art environmental health research and its future direction.
