Professor Yeung Yau-yuen: Education needs to be interactive; Mooc is not the solution.

  • Times Higher Education reported that the sudden suspension of university on-campus learning amid the COVID-19 outbreak has necessitated the virtual delivery of teaching. A survey on leaders of prominent global universities in 2018 showed the 200 respondents were emphatic that online higher education would never match the real thing.
  • EdUHK chose to deliver lectures and seminars via the web conferencing site Zoom. Professor Yeung Yau-yuen from the Department of Science and Environmental Studies said the hardware, software and systems are all there. EdUHK has established schedules and standards for online lectures, and marks attendance for group classes.
  • However, Professor Yeung said Massive Open Online Courses (Moocs) are not the solution, as online teaching requires guidance, adding that education needs to be interactive, with as much face-to-face learning as possible. Details:
