Abstract

Phylogeographical study is an interdisciplinary field to study the history, evolution and the contemporary connectivity of the organisms, using the DNA molecular information. It would unravel the speciation events, which would provide supporting evidence on the driven force of the high biodiversity. This presentation will provide a brief review on how phylogeographical studies to elucidate the evolutionary history of certain marine species and its implication. In particular, the role of the freshwater discharge from Changjiang River, the second largest river in the world, impeding gene flow between southern and northern lineages of various marine taxa along the Chinese coast will be discussed.

About the Speaker

Dr. Cheang received his bachelor, masteral and doctoral degrees from the Chinese Univeristy of Hong Kong. He was trained to be an environmental ecologist, equipped with field ecological studying skill, field identification skill of marine and terrestrial organisms, the laboratorial DNA molecular techniques and the biostatistical analyzing ability. His research expertise includes the ecology, taxonomy, phylogenetic inference and phylogeographic studies of marine algae and invertebrate such as scleractinian corals and crustacean.
