EdUHK Introduces New Speech Pathology and Rehabilitation Programme to Address Global Healthcare Needs

The EdUHK introduced the new interdisciplinary degree programme of Speech Pathology and Rehabilitation hosted by Department of Special Education and Counselling (SEC), starting from the academic year 2025/26. It is the first undergraduate programme combining speech pathology, rehabilitation, and psychology at EdUHK, aiming to train language professionals in an interdisciplinary manner to meet the changing needs of global healthcare and rehabilitation.

 

EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin stated that education must keep pace with rapid social development. "We need to focus on promoting diverse growth in education, technology, and talent development, and embrace innovative technologies, artificial intelligence, ethical values, sustainable development, and other elements. We also aim to cultivate strong collaborations with institutions and governments in the Greater Bay Area, mainland China, and globally to shape the future of education." he said.

 

EdUHK Vice President (Academic) Professor May Cheng May-hung said, “Revamping the educational curriculum at EdUHK, optimizing all Bachelor of Education programmes into Double Degree programmes, also providing students with internship opportunities in primary and secondary schools, will provide aspiring teachers with top-quality education choices. Additionally, students are required to participate in internships in non-education degree programmes. Students are required to participate in internships in non-education degree programmes to gain diverse work experiences, thereby enhancing their job prospects and competitiveness.”

 

Dr Yuen Chi Pun, Kelvin, the Associate Professor of SEC and Programme Leader of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Speech Pathology and Rehabilitation programme, noted that the programme is currently awaiting accreditation from Hong Kong Institute of Speech Therapists (HKIST). Upon accreditation, graduates will be qualified to practice as speech therapists under a recognized registration scheme. It offers interdisciplinary professional training to meet the service needs of healthcare professionals and provides clinical and community practicum opportunities to enhance students' practical experience.
