Dr Lin Dan awarded a research grant from The Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR)

2024-09-23

Dr. Lin Dan has been awarded a research grant of HK$1,168,764 from the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) for the R&D Projects 2024-25. The project aims to develop a storybook reading program that can be easily implemented in both schools and families with disadvantaged backgrounds. The program will include original storybooks and ready-to-use digital lessons accessible through an online platform. Its goal is to train key mechanisms of Chinese reading, cultivate independent reading skills and interest, and incorporate positive values and attitudes crucial for children's positive psychological development in the post-COVID era. The program will be implemented in collaboration with local partner schools, and its effectiveness will be evaluated through a rigorous training experiment.

The research findings and tangible deliverables of the project will benefit both frontline practitioners and end users. The reading program will serve as a valuable research-based resource for schools, addressing both reading development and moral education. Additionally, the program has been designed for self-learning, encouraging families' involvement in the reading and learning process.

SCOLAR's mission is to help Hong Kong's students and working adults become biliterate in written Chinese and English, and trilingual in Cantonese, Putonghua, and spoken English. Since 1994, SCOLAR has used the Language Fund to support language education through research projects, teacher development, school-based support, and creating a supportive language environment. Thanks to SCOLAR's support, it is hoped that many young children will benefit from Dr. Lin’s project.
