The 23 workshops [The Workshops List] with 2- and 4-day each will be organized with different sports governing organizations and experts to deliver up-to-date sport information for PE teachers. Each workshop will normally cater for 30 PE teachers. Through observation, need analysis for PE teachers and the recent development of the curriculum reform, the follow six types of workshops are proposed to be organized to cater for the training needs of PE teachers. They are scheduled to be organized at the end of July 2007. The descriptions of each category and number of workshops are as follows:
1. Workshops on advanced pedagogies for catering learner diversity in PE Workshops for acquainting PE teachers with knowledge and skills in planning, organizing and conducting individualized PE lessons with a variety of approaches and models such as concepts of fundamental movements, spectrum of styles, assessment for learning, sports education, teaching games for understanding and concept attainment etc. will be organized for catering diversified educational ends of students in primary schools.
2. Workshops for teaching individualized life-time pursuit activities One of the aims of the education is to prepare our students for life. The concept of “lifetime physical activities/sports” has been developed, accepted and included in PE curriculum in the past decade. They are particular relevant for senior secondary school students for equipping them with skills, knowledge and attitude for making use of physical activities for leisure, recreation, health, fitness, social and psychological benefits. Accordingly, workshops namely golf, physical fitness and nutrition for health, bowling will be organized for helping PE teachers to introduce such individualized life-time activities in schools for meeting the diverse needs, abilities and interest of the students will be organised.
3. Workshops on conducting adventure education Experiential education is a philosophy and methodology in which teachers purposefully engage with students in direct experience and focused reflection in order to increase knowledge, develop skills and clarify values. On the other hand, adventure education programme has been identified as one of the approaches that contribute to the personal development of students required by the fast changing knowledge-based society. These qualities, include self-confidence, cooperation, teamwork, creativity, trust, decision making and problem solving skills. It is proposed to organized 3 workshops aiming at enhancing secondary and primary school PE teachers’ values, knowledge, skills and attitudes in cultivating students’ responsibility, commitment, respect for others and perseverance through offering adventure-based experiential educational activities (low event challenge course and sport climbing activities) as formal or in-formal PE curricula.
4. Workshops for teaching Chinese cultural physical activities One of the aims of PE is to cultivate students’ interest in physical activities with Chinese cultural heritage. It is particular important after the change of sovereignty in 1997. Moreover, in the current educational reform, it is strongly recommended that “national identity” should be regarded as one of the five values and attitudes promoted in schools. Accordingly, to be typical of Chinese cultural activities namely Chinese Martial Art, Tai Chi, Shuttlecock are proposed to be organized. It is suggested to organize workshops for equipping PE teachers with skills and knowledge for introducing these activities to students in schools.
5. Workshops for managing and coaching sports teams “Managing and coaching” of sports teams is one of duties for most PE teachers. As a matter of fact, some PE teachers may find difficulties in fulfilling the tasks because of lacking of respective experience, skills and knowledge. Accordingly, it is proposed to organize workshops for enhancing the competence of PE teachers for managing and coaching sports teams namely in athletics or volleyball or basketball or football, etc.
6.Workshops for newly developed physical activities There are a number of newly developed physical activities which are getting popular in Hong Kong schools. Accordingly, PE teachers may need training in these events like Rugby, Mini-tennis and Hip Hop. It is proposed to organize workshops for introducing PE teachers with competence in teaching these activities in schools.
