What clothes should I pack for the conference?

In mid Oct, the temperature is normally around 20¢XC to 30¢XC. All lecture theatres and public transportation systems are air-conditioned. It is advisable to bring along a light-weight long-sleeve jacket. [Weather Information]

 

Do I need an adaptor for my electrical appliances?

The standard electrical voltage in Hong Kong is 220 volts AC, 50HZ. An adaptor is needed for electrical appliances and equipment made for other voltages. Many laptops now operate from 110v to 250 v. Most electric outlets take 3-pin plugs (square prongs, UK style).

 

What is the currency of Hong Kong use?

Legal tender is the Hong Kong dollar (HK$). The value of the Hong Kong dollar is pegged at HK$7.8 to one US dollar. The market exchange rate fluctuates marginally and there is a commission charge. Money changers are legally obliged to display the net exchange rate. VISA card, MasterCard, and American Express Card are normally accepted at most restaurants , big shopping malls and automatic teller machines.

 

What about bank services in Hong Kong?

Major banks are open from 9am to 4:30pm on weekdays, and 9am to 12:30pm on Saturdays. Most banks are close on Sundays and public holidays. Certain banking services are not available an hour before closing.

 

Health and Safety

Can I use my mobile phone in Hong Kong?

Yes, for most visitors, It is quite easy to use your own mobile phone in Hong Kong because most international telephone systems (e.g. like GSM 900, PCS 1800, CDMA and WCDMA) operate in Hong Kong. There are also roaming agreements between local mobile operators and their international counterparts. Please check with your network provider for roaming service and pricing before your travel (more information).

 

Can I have internet access on campus?

The HKIEd wireless network supports IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards. It allows anyone who has Wi-Fi device (e.g. notebook with wireless adapter, PDA with Wi-Fi) to get Internet connection over the air.

Most hotels have Internet access. A charge may be involved. You can have free Internet access on campus. Many coffee shops and large shopping malls also offer free Internet access through Wireless Broadband service. Hong Kong uses the RJ (Registered Jack) system for modems.

 

Will I be able to find my kind of food in Hong Kong?
