News Report: Seminar on Generative AI and the Metaverse in Language Learning
An insightful academic seminar titled "Beyond Traditional Boundaries: The Role of Generative AI and the Metaverse in Transforming Language Learning" took place on 2 July 2024, at the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, The Education University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. The event brought together educators, researchers, and technology experts to discuss the revolutionary potential of AI and immersive technologies in language education.
The seminar featured a keynote presentation by Prof. Yu-Ju Lan, a Research Chair Professor in the Department of Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University. Prof. Lan, who has received the Outstanding Research Award from Taiwan's Ministry of Science and Technology, highlighted the significant impact of advanced AI tools like ChatGPT on language education.
"In recent years, artificial intelligence has sparked renewed interest and debate regarding its implications in education," Prof. Lan stated. She emphasised that the emergence of models such as GPT-4o is pushing the boundaries of what is possible in educational contexts. Prof. Lan also discussed the transformative era of the metaverse, urging educators to reassess their interactions with AI in both educational and everyday settings.
