Artificial Intelligence and Educational Technology (AI&EdTech) Internship Scheme

for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

- Guidelines for Employers

Department of Mathematics and Information Technology
The Education University of Hong Kong

The University welcomes employers offering internship opportunities for our students in areas of artificial intelligence or educational technology.

1. Introduction

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) invites employers to participate in its AI&EdTech summer internship programme during May to Mid-August every year. This six-week, credit-bearing internship places highly qualified BSc(AI&EdTech) students in organizations across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The internship can be extended into a non-credit-bearing phase, with potential government funding support available through the STEM Internship Scheme.

2. About Our Students

Our students are high-achieving individuals from diverse backgrounds who have completed their Year 3 of study. They possess a strong understanding of AI and EdTech principles and extensive hands-on experience through our project-based assessment that prioritizes practical application over examinations. Those entering the programme through senior year entry hold sub-degree qualifications, with many specializing in relevant areas such as Computer Studies, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Statistics and Data Science, AI and Mobile Applications Development, AI and Smart Technology, and Computer Game Development.

By the time they undertake the internship, our students are proficient in:

  1. Programming Languages: Proficient in Python and familiar with object-oriented programming.
  2. AI/ML Techniques: Experienced with data mining, machine learning algorithms (including deep learning), and image and video processing.
  3. Key Skills: Capable in 3D design and printing, as well as web scraping and crawling.
  4. Teamwork and Communication: Trained to collaborate effectively and articulate ideas clearly.

This combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills makes our students well-prepared to contribute meaningfully to your organization, regardless of its size or industry. More details about the BSc(AI&EdTech) programme can be found at the programme webpage.

3. Company and Job Requirements

To foster a mutually beneficial internship experience, we kindly invite employers who are able to meet the following requirements:

  1. Job Roles: The internship should relate to AI, EdTech, STEM education, Data Science, or closely related fields. Pure classroom teaching roles are excluded. The role should involve substantive work, not merely observation.
  2. Work Environment: A supportive, safe, and inclusive workplace is essential for fostering learning and professional growth, with compliance to relevant labor laws.
  3. Company Type and Size: We welcome applications from organizations of all sizes, including startups, established corporations, government agencies, and non-profits.
  4. Number of Interns: Typically, 2-3 interns are placed in a single organization to encourage collaboration, though this can be adjusted based on organizational capacity.

4. Timing and Duration

The internship runs for a minimum of 200 hours, typically spanning around 6 weeks during May to mid-August after the students complete their Year 3 of study. Internship locations include Hong Kong and other Greater Bay Area cities, subject to availability. The duration will be finalized during the placement assignment process and confirmed in the internship agreement.

This 6-week internship is credit-bearing, but employers may extend it into a non-credit-bearing phase if desired. The Government's STEM Internship Scheme may support this extension. For eligibility details, please refer to the SAO website of EdUHK here: https://eduhk.hk/sao/info/career/internship_programmes/stem/. The non-credit-bearing portion of the internship will not be managed by the AI&EdTech internship team.

5. Roles of Employers

Employers are kindly requested to fulfill the following responsibilities:

  1. Candidate Selection: Inform us of the outcome of interviews to facilitate alternative arrangements if necessary.
  2. Confirmed Internship Period: Inform us of the confirmed start and end dates of the credit-bearing part of the internship, just in case there might be any changes to the originally proposed schedule.
  3. Supervision and Mentorship: Provide adequate supervision and designate a mentor to guide the intern, offer constructive feedback, and work with our Academic Tutor(s) to address any concerns.
  4. Evaluation: Conduct two performance evaluations (interim and final) for the credit-bearing part of the internship by filling out an evaluation form.
  5. Early Termination: In the unlikely event that the internship needs to be terminated prematurely, communicate this promptly so we can assist the student in finding an alternative placement.

We are eager to discuss your specific needs and collaboratively design an internship that benefits both the student and your organization.

6. Roles of the University

The Internship Coordinator(s) are responsible for planning and implementing the Internship programme and liaising with participating employers on overall arrangements.

Academic Tutors oversee the academic components of the internship and maintaining close communication with employers through formal and informal channels to address any issues that may arise during the internship. This role may also be assumed by the Internship Coordinator(s).

7. Contractual Agreements and Legal Considerations

We encourage employers to establish a formal internship agreement with student interns to clearly outline the scope of work, expectations, and terms. While this agreement is not mandatory, having it in writing can enhance clarity. The University will not be a signatory, however; the agreement is solely between the employer and the student.

Regardless of whether the internship is paid or unpaid, the University will provide documentation confirming the student's internship status, which will exempt them from the Hong Kong Minimum Wage Ordinance (MWO) or similar labour laws in other cities. Any compensation arrangements should be clearly detailed in the internship agreement with the student interns.
