With the submission of the Institute’s Development Blueprint in 2007, we have been taking forward action to further boost our academic and research capacities. Providing leadership in the development of research and scholarship, Professor Cheng Yin-cheong was appointed as the HKIEd’s new Vice President (Research and Development), coinciding with the arrival of a number of senior academics, recruited from universities both locally and internationally.

Professor Cheng, joined the HKIEd as Director of the Centre for Institutional Research and Development in 1996, and has been Acting Vice President (Research and Development) since February this year. In his new role, Professor Cheng will lead our research strategies and initiatives in high priority areas, in addition to also being responsible for forging local, regional and international networks, conducive to research collaboration and advancement.

After going through global recruitment exercises, two HKIEd staff were appointed as Chair Professor and Professor, in English and Curriculum Studies, respectively. Three other serving professors received Chair Professorships. With the arrival of the new senior scholars, the Institute will field a total of 12 Chair Professors and 14 Professors, with specialisations across a wide range of academic disciplines. By early 2009, there will be close to 30 Chair Professors and Professors at the HKIEd, one of the largest critical masses of education specialists in Asia.

DR JIMMY C.H. WONG, BBS, JP, MBBS, FRCS,

Dr Wong Chi-ho, Jimmy is the President of Tung Chun Group, a Hong Kong food company with history of more than 120 years. He is also a Specialist in Otorhinolaryngology - trained in Hong Kong, Britain and USA. Dr Wong was elected in 2003-2004, during the year of SARS, as chairman of Po Leung Kuk and as chairman of Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society Kowloon in 2006-2007. He has been appointed by the HKSAR government as a member of the Social Welfare Advisory Committee and the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged Advisory Committee. Dr Wong was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the HKSAR Government in 2004 and was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 2005.

The Institute commenced the 2008-09 academic year with the launching of a new academic structure. Our two existing Faculties were reorganised to form a three-Faculty structure on 25 August. The newly created Faculty of Languages will boost capacities in language education, while the Faculty of Education Studies and Faculty of Arts and Sciences will receive resources allocated to advance key priorities in education studies and the arts and sciences.

Under this new structure, three deans have been appointed to lead the Faculties. Professor Thomas Wong Kwok-shing, Chair Professor of Health Studies, is serving as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences while Professor Kerry Kennedy continues in his role as Dean of the Faculty of Education Studies, a position he holds alongside his responsibilities as Associate Vice President (Quality Assurance). Last but not least, Professor Andy Kirkpatrick, Chair Professor of English, has been appointed as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Languages.

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences consists of the Department of Creative Arts and Physical Education, together with the Department of Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences and Technology.

The Faculty of Education Studies comprises the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Department of Early Childhood Education, Department of Educational Policy and Administration, and the Department of Educational Psychology, Counselling and Learning Needs.

The Faculty of Languages includes the Department of Chinese, Department of English, as well as the Centre for Language in Education.
