Happy Year of the Rabbit from all of the colleagues in the EPL.

The focus of this newsletter is on school leadership and learning opportunities. This includes informal opportunities to learn from peers as well as formal coursework options. In what follows, you are invited to join a GBA forum on leadership for STEAM education, engage in e-Learning activities for school principals and teachers, and find additional resource materials. You may be particularly interested to read several brief accounts by principals on their successes in Leading Future Schools in the GBA. You will find information on all of these and other opportunities below.

Upcoming Event and Programme

The second 'School Leadership across the GBA' forum
Innovative Leadership for STEAM Education

The Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change (APCLC) and the Department of Education Policy and Leadership (EPL) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) have launched an exciting School Leadership across the GBA Forum Series. We had our first forum on 26 November 2022 at our EdUHK campus and we are expecting to organise our second forum on 22 March (Wed) in Shenzhen. The theme of the second forum is ‘Innovative Leadership for STEAM Education’.

E-Learning Programme for the Professional Development and Training for Primary and Secondary School Principals and Teachers

To encourage teachers to participate in various e-learning activities for professional development, the Committee on Professional Development of Teachers and Principals (COTAP) engaged The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) to produce three local tailor-made e-learning programmes for principals and teachers of primary or secondary schools in 2021. The e-learning programmes cover the topics of (i) School Administration and Management; (ii) STEM Education; and (iii) New Paradigm of Learning and Teaching, which were well received by the participants in 2021. In this connection, the Education Bureau decided to re-run the above three e-learning programmes in the 2022/23 school year.

Applications will start on 13 February 2023. You will be able to find the programme details on the Training Calendar System hosted by the Education Bureau.

School leaders learning together across the GBA

The Forum - 'Leading Future Schools in the GBA' which was held on 26 November 2022 was the first in a series designed to enact the APCLC's Greater Bay Area (GBA) strategy. The strategy is intended to engage school leaders across the GBA in learning from each other. Principals and policymakers from Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Macau, presented papers to over 250 principals and other educators across the GBA.

Participants believed that the forum would facilitate greater mutual understanding among school leaders in the GBA and build exciting bridges for further collaboration. They look forward to more opportunities for exchange and cooperation in the future.

The first release of Trading Places

Trading Places is a quarterly publication comprising a collection of articles written by and for school leaders across the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The idea is that leaders will learn from professional and personal sharing across traditional boundaries and systems, and have the chance to showcase exciting innovations in their schools. There are thousands of schools in the GBA. Each school has its own stories of change, success, and struggle. However, these stories often stay trapped inside school or district walls, robbing other educators of the opportunity to learn from their colleagues and improve the quality of education in their schools. Trading Places encourages successful schools, school principals and other educators to share their stories across the GBA and beyond. Such sharing aims to promote discussion, innovation, and understanding among GBA educators.

Successful launch of the first LILO face-to-face residential courses

As the world has been coming out from the pandemic with a positive outlook, we proudly launched the first face-to-face residential courses of the Master of Arts in Leading Innovative Learning Organizations (LILO) from 27 January to 1 February . Alongside our local Hong Kong school leaders and innovators, over 30 educational professionals and practitioners from 17 different locations in Mainland China travelled to Hong Kong and attended the lessons in the newly renovated Conference Centre on the EdUHK main campus. The students appreciated the learning experience in the cozy campus environment as they slowed down, reflected, and made new connections with other professionals in the education sector.

EPL partners with Salesians of Don Bosco Ng Siu Mui Secondary School in Jackfruit Festival

EPL collaborated with Salesians of Don Bosco Ng Siu Mui Secondary School in the Jackfruit Festival, a traditional celebration in Kwong Pan Tin Village in Tsuen Wan. Besides understanding the history and culture of Kwong Pan Tin Village, the event also let EdUHK students, participating teachers, and students experience again the close relationship between “community” and “learning”. Dr Gail Yuen Wai Kwan, Associate Professor of EPL, wished to promote non-formal experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom through participating in the event.
