GEL1011 Study Tour Abroad: “Conflict and Peace in Central Europe”

2024-06-26

The Department of International Education (IE) has led a breakthrough in innovation in teaching and learning at EdUHK: the study tour, “Conflict and Peace in Europe”, led by Dr Ezechiel Thibaud, formed part of the new Experiential Learning Course (ELC) of the same name.  IE has led numerous study tours abroad in the past.  Building on that experience, they now offer this ELC as a three-credit elective course to undergraduate students.

The purpose of this course is to learn about the process of peace-making in Western and Central Europe. We started our tour in Berlin, where we learned about the Nazi regime, World War II, but also the Cold War. Highlights of the Berlin visit included Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, the (Nazi) Terror Museum, the Holocaust Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, and the Berlin Wall. We then travelled to Brussels, which is home of the European Parliament. Students learned the process through which European countries established peace and economic relations and formed the European Union. This tour was a fantastic opportunity to learn from the mistakes and successes of the past, and reflect on how to build a brighter future.
