The Rise of Challenger Universities and the Rethinking of Higher Education

by Dr Justin SANDERS, Minerva

Discussant: Dr Ewan WRIGHT

Chair: Professor Anatoly OLEKSIYENKO

Given the rapid and dramatic changes our world has undergone in recent decades, there is a growing anxiety about traditional universities being unable to meet new and complex demands. In response, a new generation of higher education institutions is being established. They are frequently viewed as “challenger universities”, since they strive to offer innovative, often technology-enabled, models of higher education that they themselves see as better equipped to serve diverse populations by enhancing student learning, mitigating structural and economic inequalities, and addressing global challenges. This new generation of universities includes a captivating group of institutions as represented by the African Leadership University, the University of the People, the New School, the London Interdisciplinary School, and Minerva University, among others. This seminar will provide a brief overview of the challenger university segment and of the commonalities that set them apart as a class from more traditional institutions, and delve into a number of case studies. Importantly, we will discuss implications for established institutions and systems.
