人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter This was an eventful year for the department. In December 2015, we organized the International Conference on Corpus Linguistics and Technology Advancement (CoLTA 2015). The CoLTA 2015 conference brought together academics from around the world to report on their various corpus linguistics related research work, especially new technologies employed in the investigation into corpora in linguistics, language learning and translation studies. As more and more new technological tools have been developed in recent years for corpus linguistics research, and many Hong Kong tertiary institutions, including the EdUHK, are actively engaged in this research area, we hope that through the conference we can promote Hong Kong as a hub for academic exchanges and collaborations in the area of technology-driven corpus for linguistics scholars around the world. Sponsored by Tin Ka Ping Foundation, the department received Professor Luo Xuanmin, Yunshan Leading Professor, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Professor of Translation and Cultural Studies, Tsinghua University as our visiting professor in January 2016. During his visit, Professor Luo delivered a talk on Cultural Awareness and the Transmission of Chinese Culture at the Forum on Translation Studies, which saw the epartment of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies 語言學及現代語言系 Message from the Head The Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) was established in 2012 upon the restructuring of the Faculty of Languages, now re-titled the Faculty of Humanities. LML aspires to seek knowledge for advancing our understanding of the triangulated relation between language, mind and society. Because of the progress in information technology, human communications have been changing drastically. Now we often find ourselves communicating via multimedia devices that allow multilingual switching. Records of communication can be stored and transmitted instantly with very few limitations. The impacts of these changes on the human language system, its learning and its use have yet to be duly gauged. LML, avowedly the youngest linguistics department in Hong Kong, will make its best effort in this exciting and challenging scientific inquiry. With the above undertakings, we also anticipate synergies between general linguistics and applied linguistics in the curriculum development of language education and language studies, which will further contribute to the growth of the Faculty of Humanities. Professor Cheung Hin Tat(張顯達教授) Head, Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies participation of two other distinguished scholars in translation studies, namely Professor Mo Aiping from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Professor He Xianbin from Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University. Professor Luo also gave another public lecture on intertextuality and translation. These academic activities have been conducive to the further development of translation studies at the department. Currently, we are offering two courses in translation and will offer more new courses in this discipline in the future. In Semester 1, the department offered its first Co-curricular Service Learning (CSL) course: Understanding Linguistic and Related Barriers Through Services to Socially Disadvantaged Children. Following the Institute’s 4Cs learning framework, namely Character and moral responsibility, Competence and professional excellence, Cultivation of wisdom and intellectual engagement, and Civic-mindedness & social responsibility, this CSL course aims to extend students’ learning experience beyond traditional classroom-based curriculum by developing their sense of responsibility and interpersonal skills, and engaging them to provide services to socially disadvantaged children in Hong Kong. The Playground Association of Hong Kong (香港遊樂場協會) is the partnering unit of this CSL course which offered direct service opportunities for our students. The direct services cover a number of domains and subject areas such as tutorial and homework guidance groups (primary and secondary levels), English study groups, organization of contests, and other activities for socially disadvantaged children.
