人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter 3 歡迎閱覽人文學院第四期通訊。 香港教育學院在2016年5月27日正名為香港教育 大學(教大),教院學生、教職員、校友、持份者 及支持者見證著教大邁向重要的里程碑,寫下歷 史的新一頁。隨著教大正名,大學的地位得以提 高,人文學院將會繼續整合既有的學術專業和優 勢,提升教學及研究的質素,積極推動與區內及 海外大學的合作。 人文學院在大學的歷史雖短,然而在大學取得正 名上扮演著十分重要的角色。為了配合大學的發 展策略,人文學院在過去數年展開了一系列的工 作,克服重重的挑戰,從學院重組、語文研究榮 譽文學士課程覆審,以至中文研究及英文研究學 科範圍評審,學院一直致力推行改革,完善及開 展新課程及學科,加強教研實力。今天,我們長 久以來的夢想終於實現,人文學院同仁亦有幸能 為教大的正名出一份綿力。 人文學院憑藉既有的學術基礎,在人文學科以及 相關的範疇,積極籌辦嶄新的學士及碩士課程, 部份課程將於2016/17年度開辦,今期通訊藉此 介紹這些新課程的理念,並訪問了中國歷史教育 榮譽學士候任課程主任施仲謀教授及漢語作為第 二語言教學榮譽文學士候任課程主任梁源博士。 過去一年,學院的老師獲得卓越的表現。文學及 文化學系王良和博士的著作《破地獄》榮獲第十 三屆「香港中文文學雙年獎」小說組首獎。王博 士另一著作《蟑螂變》亦獲選為亞洲週刊2015 年十大小說之一;同系的陳智德博士主編的《香 港文學大系1919─1949:新詩卷》亦於香港電 台文教組及香港出版總會主辦的「第八屆香港書 獎」獲獎。同系另一老師黃裕邦先生於第28屆 Lambda Literary Award中,憑詩集《天裂》獲 得男同志詩歌組獎項,成為首位得到該獎項的亞 洲詩人作家。此外,中國語言學系張壽洪博士更 獲得2015/16傑出教學表現校長獎項。 在研究方面,人文學院於2015年6月獲教資會資 助6個優配研究金(General Research Fund)項目 及3個傑出青年學者計劃(Early Career Scheme) ,共獲$240萬資助金,創學院新高,成功率為 46.2%,較全校及其他學院的比率為高。 我們期望與各方人士保持緊密的聯繫,力臻至 善。繼往開來,我們秉持教研相長的宗旨,迎向 挑戰,發揮人文教育的社會影響,為本港以至其 他地區作出貢獻。 人文學院院長 陳國球教授 Welcome to the 4th issue of the Faculty of Humanities’ Newsletter. On 27 May 2016, The Hong Kong Institute of Education celebrated a significant milestone and a new chapter in history, for it was ultimately retitled The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). This is a historical and momentous moment which has been longed for among our students, staff members, alumni, stakeholders and supporters. With the new University title which will raise our profile as a whole, the Faculty of Humanities (FHM) will continue to consolidate our strengths and expertise in enhancing teaching and research, as well as to steer more rigorous regional and international collaboration. FHM has played an imperative role in the University’s strategic development in the transformation into a multidisciplinary University despite its youngest history in the University. Over the past years, FHM has overcome huge challenges to go through a long way from the Faculty’s restructuring, the revalidation of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Language Studies to the Programme Area Accreditation in Chinese Studies and English Studies. We have been striving our best to implement a series of reforms to pursue this common goal of the University titlement, such as reviewing and updating our curriculum, launching new programmes and courses, as well as expanding our teaching and research capacity. Today, our dreams have eventually come true, and members of FHM are proud to have made a contribution to the attainment of the University title. As we move towards the establishment of the University, FHM builds upon our pre-existing strengths to design new programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in a wider spectrum of the Humanities related disciplines. This issue features interviews with some of these great movers, including Professor Si Chung Mou and Dr. Liang Yuan, the Programme Leaders-Designate of the new Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Chinese History) and the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language respectively, who will share with you the philosophy of these brand-new programmes which will be launched in the 2016/17 academic year. Faculty members of FHM have been highly recognised for their excellent achievements in the past year. For instance, Dr. Wong Leung Wo (Department of Literature and Cultural Studies) was awarded the Biennial Award in the Fiction Category at the 13th Hong Kong Biennial Award for Chinese Literature for his collection of fiction, Breakthrough from Hell. In addition, Dr. Wong’s fiction collection Transformation of Cockroaches was selected as one of the top ten fiction books of 2015 by Yazhou Zhoukan (Asia Weekly). Mr. Wong Yu Bon, Nicholas (Department of Literature and Cultural Studies) was awarded at the 28th Lambda Literary Award under the category of Gay Poetry for his collection of poetry, Crevasse. He is the first Asian poet receiving this honour. Besides, Dr. Chan Chi Tak’s (Department of Literature and Cultural Studies) book titled Hong Kong Literature 1919-1949: Modern Poetry, won the 8th Hong Kong Book Prize from the Culture and Education Unit of Radio Television Hong Kong and Hong Kong Publishing Federation. Dr. Cheung Sau Hung (Department of Chinese Language Studies) also won the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching in 2015/16. On the research front, FHM reached a record high in June 2015 by winning 6 General Research Fund (GRF) projects and 3 Early Career Scheme (ECS) projects amounting to a total of HK$2.4 million, with a success rate of 46.2% which was the highest among all Faculties and the then Institute’s GRF total rate (32.6%). I look forward to working closely with all the stakeholders of FHM in the coming days. With all our concerted efforts, I am sure that we will continue to take on all the challenges ahead and to make our contribution to Hong Kong and beyond, with our long-established strengths in humanities education. 人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter The Faculty of Humanities presented its Faculty Teaching Award at the Faculty Assembly on 1 September 2015. The four awardees are Dr. Cheung Sau Hung from the Department of Chinese Language Studies, Dr. Chen Hsueh Chu, Rebecca from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies, and Dr. Leung Wai Ha and Ms. Lau Tak Sin from the Centre for Language in Education. Dr. Cheung Sau Hung, the recipient of the Faculty Teaching Award, has rich experience in teaching pedagogy. He always helps students develop their critical thinking and become active learners and reflective teachers. To stimulate students’ learning interest, Dr. Cheung provides authentic learning contexts to students and always uses examples from daily life and varied assessment tasks. Exhibiting great vision and a passion for education, Dr. Cheung is also dedicated to integrating his research output and practical knowledge in his teaching. His teaching methods are effective, as evidenced by his consistently high SET scores and the positive feedback received from students and colleagues alike. Dr. Chen Hsueh Chu, Rebecca, the recipient of the Faculty Teaching Award, is an energetic and enthusiastic educator. She is devoted to innovative teaching that caters to the diverse needs of students in a variety of learning contexts. She is creative in instructional design and able to connect students’ learning to real life. Dr. Chen demonstrates strong ability in research-informed teaching, scholarly research publications and enhancement of research capability through supervision of students. Dr. Chen is held in high esteem by her students and colleagues as a competent and caring teacher who consistently implements interesting and thought-provoking teaching strategies. Dr. Leung Wai Ha, the recipient of the Certificate of Merit, is an experienced and effective teacher who promotes student-centred learning. She is well-versed in using different pedagogical strategies to stimulate students’ learning interest. Besides, Dr. Leung has outstanding performance in research related activities. She has taken a leading role in Teaching Development Grant (TDG) projects and has applied research outcomes to enhance student learning in various Chinese enhancement courses. Currently, Dr. Leung is the team leader of the Chinese Enhancement Programme, steering the development and implementation of the Chinese enhancement courses for all non-Chinese major programmes. Ms. Lau Tak Sin, the recipient of the Certificate of Merit, is a dedicated Putonghua teacher highly regarded by her students. The courses she teaches are always well-planned and highly structured with reference to the learning needs and language development of students. Her enthusiasm for Putonghua teaching and effective teaching methods leads students to engage in various learning activities and become active learners. Ms. Lau also provides optimal and timely feedback to her students which helps them to improve their language effectively. Congratulations to Dr. Cheung, Dr. Chen, Dr. Leung and Ms. Lau for their substantial contributions to the advancement of teaching and learning for our students. 人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter The new Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Chinese History) Programme offered by EdUHK is the first programme of its kind in Hong Kong. It aims to cultivate students with professional ethics, creativity, lively teaching abilities and a global perspective on teaching Chinese History in secondary schools. We aspire to broaden students’ horizons by analyzing ancient and contemporary Chinese history through various perspectives, including but not limited to the cultural, political, economic, social and geographical aspects. By integrating knowledge of Chinese history and relevant pedagogy, we are dedicated to delivering the programme through an innovative approach by combining theory and practice. Q: 目前香港的大學已開設中國歷史學士課程,你們的課程有甚麼不同呢? A: 目前香港大學、中文大學、浸會大學、嶺南大學都開設歷史或中國歷史本科課程,香港教育大學的中國歷史榮譽教育 學士是全港首個同類課程,我們希望培育既具學科知識,亦擅長教學的準教師。 Q: 這個課程跟其他中國歷史課程比較,有甚麼特色呢? A: 這個中國歷史教育課程,旨在培養學生具備廣博的中國歷史知識,透過不同的中國歷史課題,從多角度來拓寬學生對 古今中國歷史的視野,從而掌握中國歷史研究的新方向。課堂會側重裝備準教師如何誘發中學生對中史的興趣。具 體的課程設計方面,我們由不同領域的專家學者組成課程發展小組,從不同角度,例如政治、經濟、社會、地理、 文化、文學等角度設計課程內容。同時,我們亦透過不同的聚焦小組,邀請教育局,考評局,中國歷史教師協會,校 長、教師,以及歷史學家如丁新豹博士等,一起探討課程內容。課程最後還經過哈佛大學和本港的大學教授作外評, 確保課程質素,符合學生需要。 Q: 修讀中國歷史教學課程的學生,有機會同時讀一些 世界歷史課程嗎? A: 我們的課程採用中西兼容的方式,以比較不同的 歷史導向。有部份課程,例如近代史和香港史,會 與修讀歷史的同學一起上課,讓學生可以同時吸 取西方研究歷史的方式,培養多角度分析問題和批 判性思考的能力。我們的核心課程,70%用中文授 課,30%用英文授課。 Q: 聽說選考DSE中國歷史科目的考生不多,你們做過 市場需求調查嗎? 人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Programme (BA(TCSL)) is a unique education-plus programme which aims at nurturing professionals in teaching Chinese as a Second Language. Students of this programme will be equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge including general linguistics, language teaching pedagogy, educational psychology, and sociology, and the ability to analyze issues and concerns in realworld language use in the context of multilingualism and globalization. Q: 為甚麼會有漢語作為第二語言教學榮譽文學士的出現? A: 漢語作為第二語言教學榮譽學士 BA(TCSL) 課程的設計因應了國際和本地的不同需求。 近年全球興起了「漢語熱」:根據中國對外漢語辦公室的不完全統計,目前海外學習漢語的人數已超過一億,有100 多個國家的2,500多所大學在教授漢語,越來越多的國外中小學開設了漢語課程。然而,在「漢語熱」持續的同時, 漢語作為第二語言教學的專業人才匱乏,成為漢語教學發展的瓶頸。從本地來看,香港作為中西文化薈萃的國際大 都市,漢語在推動相關經濟文化交流活動中起著重要作用,政府推行兩文三語的政策,但以往漢語教學較著重一語 教學而忽略二語教學。隨著國際學校的漢語二語學習需求不斷增長、以及少數族裔學習漢語的障礙和困難越來越突 出,培養漢語作為第二語言教學的專業人才同樣成為了本地的迫切需求。 Q: 課程有甚麼特點? A: 課程特色主要體現在三個方面。 首先注重對漢語本科知識的深入理解。作為漢語老師(不管一語還是二語),他/她不僅需要具備流利的口頭和書 面表達能力,還必須知其所以然,能夠明白和掌握流利表達背後的語言機制。為此,BA(TCSL)設計了系統的漢語本 科知識科目,比如現代和古代漢語、兒童語言發展、漢字學等等。其次強調漢語作為第二語言教學的專業能力,希 望學生能認識不同文化對於語言的教與學的影響、認識一語課程與二語課程的區別。最後是理論探究與教學實踐並 重,課程將提供系列漢語二語教學法的科目和訓練,並要求學生必須參與學校體驗,到真實教學環境中通過實戰深 化對理論的認識,提升自己轉化知識以解決問題的能力。 Q: 為甚麼首三年只招收副學士畢業生? A: 根據大學計劃,BA(TCSL)在未來三年只招收副學士畢業生。但是,BA(TCSL)本身並不屬於一個銜接課程,而是按照 四年課程進行設計的本科(BA)課程。當副學士畢業生入讀BA(TCSL)的三年級時,他們所學的也不是直接從原來設計 中抽取的三、四年級科目,而是我們考慮了副學士背景和基礎 後重新選定的科目。因此可以說,BA(TCSL)課程有兩套系列。 雖然目前我們只招收副學士畢業生,我們希望三年以後招收一 年級本科學生、以及非本地學生。從長遠來看,畢業生可以到 海外學校任教漢語二語,或者非本地生回到原居地教授漢語二 語,這將大大有助擴大學院的國際化影響。 Q: 學生有甚麼實習機會? A: BA(TCSL)為學員安排了不同類別的學校體驗,使學員在 實踐中學習和了解漢語作為第二語言教學的情況。學員將 先到本地的國際學校及服務機構參觀,拓寬對本地教育背 景的認識;然後,分配到外地的國際學校(或學院)進行 為期四周的漢語二語教學活動,結合理論與實踐、積累經 驗,逐步發展個人的教學專業。 Q: 預料畢業生的前景如何? 人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter Message from the Head of ELE Another year goes by and while on a day-to-day basis, nothing appears to change, we all know we live in an era of rapid change. Here at ELE, we do our best to stay in tune with macro-educational movements while also keeping our eye on the changes taking place locally. On a macro level, we realize that students need to be encouraged to take more ownership of their learning, and there appear to be worldwide moves to inspire learning beyond the classroom. And this does not simply mean doing homework. Rather, it means giving students more opportunities to explore on their own. Some of our new CoCurricular Service Learning (CSL) courses mostly take place outside the classroom in schools and the community. Of course, such innovation is not only confined to CSL courses. Our main educational business in ELE is the English language, and so our staff do their best to stay abreast of the times by acting as change agents that will in turn encourage our students to bring innovation to their own classrooms when they become English teachers. On the local level, changing demographics are forcing us to branch into new areas as primary places decline over the next few years. Apart from focusing more on secondary education, ELE is expanding its range of PDPs for in-service teachers in the recognition that we have to stay relevant for the professional community. In these challenging times. ELE will continue to remain keenly aware of innovations in language teaching as well as education as a whole and implement change to best serve our students. The primary aim of this series is to provide participants with a taste of some of the other aspects of language learning that are seldom taught in school. 人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter New Staff Dr. Letty Chan has recently completed her doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics in Nottingham (UK). Prior to her PhD, she taught English in secondary schools, community college and university settings. She is currently teaching English for academic purposes, primary ELT curriculum, and teaching English in the primary school in ELE. Her research interests include second language motivation, L2 motivational self-system and second language acquisition. Dr. Rui Yuan obtained his PhD from Faculty of Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests include language teacher identity, action research, and teacher educators in higher education. As a novice academic, he feels it is a great honor to join EdUHK, one of the leading teacher education institutions in Hong Kong. English Language Education Saturday Seminar Series It has been a tradition for the Department of English Language Education to present a series of Saturday seminars for English teachers and subject teachers of both primary and secondary schools. This year the seminar series was held in the fall of 2015, and a repeat was held in the spring of 2016. The seminars this academic year aim to enhance teachers’methods in teaching English grammar. The seminars also provided a channel for the department to introduce different professional development programmes (PDPs) to teachers after they had learned a little bit about the topics and issues. These 3-hour seminars held on Saturday mornings at the HKIEd Tai Po Campus were well attended attracting close to 500 applicant teachers. We were pleased to read post-seminar comments that were very positive. 人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter This was an eventful year for the department. In December 2015, we organized the International Conference on Corpus Linguistics and Technology Advancement (CoLTA 2015). The CoLTA 2015 conference brought together academics from around the world to report on their various corpus linguistics related research work, especially new technologies employed in the investigation into corpora in linguistics, language learning and translation studies. As more and more new technological tools have been developed in recent years for corpus linguistics research, and many Hong Kong tertiary institutions, including the EdUHK, are actively engaged in this research area, we hope that through the conference we can promote Hong Kong as a hub for academic exchanges and collaborations in the area of technology-driven corpus for linguistics scholars around the world. Sponsored by Tin Ka Ping Foundation, the department received Professor Luo Xuanmin, Yunshan Leading Professor, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Professor of Translation and Cultural Studies, Tsinghua University as our visiting professor in January 2016. During his visit, Professor Luo delivered a talk on Cultural Awareness and the Transmission of Chinese Culture at the Forum on Translation Studies, which saw the epartment of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies 語言學及現代語言系 Message from the Head The Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) was established in 2012 upon the restructuring of the Faculty of Languages, now re-titled the Faculty of Humanities. LML aspires to seek knowledge for advancing our understanding of the triangulated relation between language, mind and society. Because of the progress in information technology, human communications have been changing drastically. Now we often find ourselves communicating via multimedia devices that allow multilingual switching. Records of communication can be stored and transmitted instantly with very few limitations. The impacts of these changes on the human language system, its learning and its use have yet to be duly gauged. LML, avowedly the youngest linguistics department in Hong Kong, will make its best effort in this exciting and challenging scientific inquiry. With the above undertakings, we also anticipate synergies between general linguistics and applied linguistics in the curriculum development of language education and language studies, which will further contribute to the growth of the Faculty of Humanities. Professor Cheung Hin Tat(張顯達教授) Head, Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies participation of two other distinguished scholars in translation studies, namely Professor Mo Aiping from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Professor He Xianbin from Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University. Professor Luo also gave another public lecture on intertextuality and translation. These academic activities have been conducive to the further development of translation studies at the department. Currently, we are offering two courses in translation and will offer more new courses in this discipline in the future. In Semester 1, the department offered its first Co-curricular Service Learning (CSL) course: Understanding Linguistic and Related Barriers Through Services to Socially Disadvantaged Children. Following the Institute’s 4Cs learning framework, namely Character and moral responsibility, Competence and professional excellence, Cultivation of wisdom and intellectual engagement, and Civic-mindedness & social responsibility, this CSL course aims to extend students’ learning experience beyond traditional classroom-based curriculum by developing their sense of responsibility and interpersonal skills, and engaging them to provide services to socially disadvantaged children in Hong Kong. The Playground Association of Hong Kong (香港遊樂場協會) is the partnering unit of this CSL course which offered direct service opportunities for our students. The direct services cover a number of domains and subject areas such as tutorial and homework guidance groups (primary and secondary levels), English study groups, organization of contests, and other activities for socially disadvantaged children. 人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter New staff Tang Kin Ling (鄧健苓) received her PhD in Cultural Studies from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and her MA in Translation and Interpretation from City University of Hong Kong. She also holds an MA in Political Science from Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, France. Before joining EdUHK, she taught in a number of tertiary institutions in Hong Kong as a visiting lecturer. Her research interests lie in discourse, language and power, politics of translation, development, globalisation and space. Currently, she is conducting two research projects on translation and the construction of national identity. She is also a seasoned practitioner in translation and bilingual editing, with industry experience spanning from the mass media, transportation, real estate to the government. She is trilingual with fluency in Chinese (Cantonese and Putonghua), English and French. Forum on Translation Studies. In collaboration with the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau, the department and Centre for Popular Culture in the Humanities presented the University Francophone Film Festival. Four selected films were shown on HKIEd campus on Wednesday nights in March 2016. Featuring couples struggling with socio-cultural differences and warfare, a cat that is eager to talk about religion and homeless wanderers in the French capital, they present four diverse visions from the francophone region. To enhance the motivation of tertiary students in the study of translation and to raise their translation levels, a Chinese-English translation competition was held in Semester 2, targeting all undergraduate students in Hong Kong. The competition was divided into two stages. In the first stage, participants translated a source text of about 300 words from Chinese into English. The top 10 entrants entered the final contest held on HKIEd campus on 15 April 2016. In addition to students from HKIEd, the contest received a number of entries from students from other institutions in Hong Kong.

人文學院通訊 FHM Newsletter Message from the Head Since its founding in 2012, the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS) has been actively contributing to curriculum development, programme management, and research in the wake of HKIEd’s transformation into a multi-disciplinary university of education. LCS focuses its research endeavours in the following areas, namely, traditional Chinese literature and culture, modern and contemporary Sinophone literature and culture, Anglophone literature and cultural studies, and history. In 2015, LCS successfully obtained 6 Research Grant Council (RGC) grants, and now it has 12 on-going RGC-funded projects. The research fields that have been fruitfully developed include traditional Chinese literature, intellectual history, Hong Kong literature, children’s literature, new English literatures, and film studies. Regarding curriculum development, a new Bachelor of Education programme, BEd(History), was introduced in 2015/16, and a related programme, BEd(Chinese History), will be launched in 2016/17. With the collaboration of its seasoned academic and research staff and the contribution of new recruits, the Department will continue to explore promising new fields of study and novel pedagogical practices. To help LCS colleagues better understand how to use technology in their teaching, a workshop on e-learning was organized on 3 February 2016.
