The Science of Learning | Distinguished Visiting Professors Online lecture

2021-06-30

Professor Linda Darling-Hammond, of Stanford University, will deliver FEHD's third Distinguished Visiting Professors Online lecture.

Professor Darling-Hammond’s talk, The Science of Learning and Development and Educator Preparation, discusses recent breakthroughs in the science of learning and development from a multidisciplinary perspective, and the implications they have for teaching and teacher education.

To prepare students to become expert thinkers and complex communicators, Professor Darling-Hammond argues that education should focus on the teaching of learning ability. Curricular designs and instructional strategies should support and develop student capacities, competencies, and motivation. Likewise, assessments should support students in developing a growth mindset. To achieve these goals, Professor Darling-Hammond maintains that educator development should be reviewed to support these changes.

After Professor Darling-Hammond’s talk, an EdUHK panel will discuss existing practices in curriculum design, pedagogy, assessment and culture in schools, as well as the pre-service and in-service training for teachers.

The panel includes:

  • Professor May Cheng, Chair Professor of EdUHK
  • Professor Sylvia Tang, Professor (Practice) of EdUHK
  • Dr Alfredo Bautista, Associate Professor of EdUHK
  • Mr Poon Kai Cheung Franky, Principal of Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Tai Po Secondary School

The next lecture will be released in July. To learn more about the series, please click here.
