Guidance and Counselling

Description
  • The Minor in Guidance and Counselling aids educators and school counsellors to work with diverse student groups with mental health challenges in schools and the community.
  • Educators and school guidance counsellors are expected to work with all student groups with regard to bullying, substance abuse, child abuse, emotional stress, depression, sexuality, and special educational needs etc. The courses give students a grounding in the value foundation of social justice, respect for diversity, and diverse theoretical perspectives.
  • This Minor aims to help participants acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills required to fulfill their role in schools and the community.

Career / Study Progression

Equips students with the skills educators and school guidance counsellors need to work with all student groups, including disabilities, ethnic minorities, and sexual minority groups etc.

Paves the way for students to become guidance / career teachers (for BEd students), counsellor assistants, sexuality educators etc. in schools and in the community.

Students interested in further study after graduation may continue postgraduate studies in various University of Hong Kong, in the field of counselling, social work, education, psychology and special education.  Examples of these master programmes in the EdUHK include the Master of Education (Area of Focus in Special Needs, Giftedness and Counselling), the Master of Social Sciences in Psychology (Schools and Community Settings), the Master of Arts in Educational Counselling, as well as the Master of Science in Educational Speech-Language Pathology and Learning Disabilities.
