The rapid increase of the availability of information in this knowledge-based society has necessitated new demands in the education sector. In Hong Kong, one of significant aims of education reform is to develop students’ capability in learning to learn. To meet these demands, teachers have a pressing need to develop effective pedagogies and appropriate lesson designs to make learning more efficient and to foster the skills of life-long learning at school. Self-directed learning is recognized as a predictor of student academic achievement and a key competence in maintaining life-long learning. This course provides in-service teachers with the key theories and concepts of self-directed learning and recent models of self-directed learning which pertain to motivational, cognitive, and metacognitive aspects. Teacher participants will explore the challenges they might encounter while teaching students to be self-directed and life-long learners as well as how to develop effective assessment tools to evaluate students’ competency in self-directed learning during the course.
