EQUITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE IN GLOBAL HIGHER EDUCATION |
Module Synopsis 單元概要 |
Higher education is widely regarded as the “great equaliser” of life chances. From this perspective, the hardest-working and the most talented students will be rewarded for higher education participation by accumulating the skills and qualifications to thrive in advanced societies, irrespective of their background, identity, or personal circumstances. The current course will investigate if and how higher education lives up to this reputation and the implications for realising equity and social justice. Students will develop a solid theoretical foundation and explore cutting-edge research on how inequities and social injustices can persist in increasingly inclusive but stratified higher education systems. Specifically, students will gain a critical understanding of how power disparities related to social class, gender, “race”/ethnicity, disability, and citizenship interact with equity and social justice in higher education. The global literature will be situated in an Asian context, and students will be encouraged to share their personal experiences and perspectives. The emphasis will be on identifying high-impact solutions for creating more equitable and socially just higher education environments. In so doing, students will be equipped with the knowledge to take informed action to promote social justice through professional practice and education policy. |
