UNDERSTANDING THE POOR AND NEEDY IN HONG KONG 了解香港貧窮社群 |
Module Synopsis 單元概要 |
Poverty is the root of many social problems such as the lack of medical services and schooling opportunities in both developing and developed countries. People need to have a deeper appreciation of what the causes of poverty are and understand what hinders the effectiveness of services before genuine support will be provided to the needy. Through studying the relevant literature and gaining first-hand service experiences with the poor in Hong Kong, this course aims to help students develop a deeper understanding of the issues in relation to poverty in the contemporary world and to promote students’ self-reflection on their roles and responsibilities as a fellow citizen. The direct learning process, which includes making home visits to poor families and engaging in sharing seminars given by community organisations, will enable students to gain relevant experience and knowledge about poverty and enhance their understanding of the diverse needs of different poverty groups in Hong Kong. |
