This course aims to develop students' theoretical knowledge and innovative strategies in motivating learners of English as a second language. It will introduce students to key theories of second language learning motivation and examine how motivation theories can be applied to develop innovative strategies for classroom teaching and learners' self-regulated learning. The course will familiarise students with the nature and complexity of motivation in second language acquisition and motivation-related constructs such as second language selves, learner beliefs, agency and autonomy; and the development of theories in second language learning motivation. It will explore innovative strategies such as building vision in the language classroom, motivating learners through task-based language teaching and engaging learners through language arts. Students will reflect on their own language learning trajectories and professionally develop themselves as motivating teachers. |
