Objectives


  1. To recognize and pronounce Cantonese words with the initials [j], [h], [s], [ng], [g];
  2. To recognize and pronounce Cantonese words with the finals [a], [ai], [an], [aan], [ang];
  3. To use simple Cantonese vocabulary and expressions in greetings.

I am English.

我係英國人。

Conversation   Practice with a partner.


Scene I: Making a new friend.


Sally: I am Sally. What is your name?

   我係Sally,你叫咩名呀?

   [ngo5 hai6 Sally, nei5 giu3 mei1 meng2 a3?]


Linda: My name is Linda. Nice to meet you.

   我叫Linda。好高興認識你。

   [ngo5 giu3 Linda, hou2 gou1 hing3 ying6 sik1 nei5.]


Sally: Where do you come from?

   你係邊度人呀?

   [nei5 hai6 bin1 dou6 yan4 a3?]


Linda: I am English.

   我係英國人。

   [ngo5 hai6 ying1 gwok3 yan4.]


Sally: I come from USA.

   我喺美國嚟嘅。

   [ngo5 hai2 mei5 gwok3 lei4 ge3.]


Linda: We are in the same class learning Cantonese.

   我哋同一班上廣州話堂呀!

Scene II: Peter meets John on campus.


Peter: Good evening, John.

   晚安,John.

   [maan5 on1, John. ]


John: Good evening, Peter

    晚安, Peter.

    [maan5 on1, Peter.]


Peter: How are you?

   你好嗎?

   [nei5 hou2 ma1?]


John: I am fine. And you?

   我幾好。你呢?

   [ngo5 gei2 hou2. nei5 ne1?]


Peter: Not too bad. But I am very busy recently.

   仲可以,但係最近好忙。

   [jung6 ho2 yi5. daan6 hai6 jeui3 gan6 hou2 mong4.]


John: Where are you going?

    你而家去邊度?

    [nei5 yi4 ga1 heui3 bin1 do6?]


Peter: I am going to the library.

   我去圖書館。

   [ngo5 heui3 tou4 syu1 gun2.]


John: I am heading back home. Goodbye.

    我返屋企喇,再見。
