Seminar on Pedagogies of Moral and Civic Education for Democratic Citizenship

The objective of this seminar on Pedagogies of Moral and Civic Education for Democratic Citizenship is to bring together a small, focused group of moral and civic education scholars to facilitate in-depth discussion, the sharing of perspectives, and the exchange of ideas on themes of teaching and learning in moral and civic education, with the outcome of further collaboration, research, and publication among participants.
In previous meetings among citizenship education scholars from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, and in much of the literature on moral and civic education in Asia, the focus has been on the intended or official curriculum, particularly as found in official documents and textbooks. In this seminar we would like to explore what is actually taught and what students actually learn at the primary and secondary levels of education. This calls for evidence beyond policy documents and textbooks, in the form of literature and empirical research on what actually happens in schools.
Specific questions might address include:
�� What do we know, and what do we not know, about the teaching and learning of moral and civic education in schools in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan?
�� To what extent does actual teaching and learning reflect the official curriculum of moral and civic education?
�� How is democratic citizenship defined and understood?
�� To what extent does actual teaching and learning promote democratic citizenship?
�� How do teachers and students perceive moral and civic education?
�� What teaching and learning approaches might make moral and civic education more successful?
�� What role does assessment play in the teaching and learning of moral and civic education?
