Invited Seminar on National Education

The objective of this seminar on National Education is to bring together a small, focused group of civic and national education scholars and practitioners to engage in in-depth discussion, share perspectives, and exchange ideas on the teaching and learning of national education, with the outcome of further collaboration, research, and publication among participants.

Seminar participants will explore conceptions of national identity and the theory, practice, and pedagogy of national education in schools and classrooms in diverse Chinese contexts, with a particular focus on what is taught and what students learn about their nation at the primary and secondary levels of education.

 

Specific questions might address include:

ĆWhat is the meaning of national identity in Chinese contexts?

ĆWhat is the relationship between national identity and multiple citizenship identities?

Ć What are the goals of national education?

ĆHow is national education carried out in schools and classrooms?

ĆHow do teachers and students perceive the goals and practice of national education?

ĆHow is national education assessed and evaluated at student and school levels?

ĆHow can success in carrying out national education be defined? How successful is national education in achieving

ĆĆintended goals? How might it be made more successful?

ĆIs there a role for critical thinking in the theory and practice of national education?
