The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) has received support from the Lee Hysan Foundation, the Sylvia Shive Memorial Fund, the Fulbright Program, and Hong Kong’s University Grants Committee matching funds for a three-year project that brings 16 recent U.S. graduates annually for a one-year programme to enhance language and cross-cultural opportunities for Hong Kong’s future teachers. The English Teaching Assistants (ETAs), attached to each of HKIEd’s academic departments and resident in the student Halls, have a variety of responsibilities in helping develop students’ proficiency in languages and autonomy in language learning, as well as offering a variety of intercultural enrichment activities.

What is it like for Asian-Americans to come back to live and work in Hong Kong and China? What are their impressions of Hong Kong? How might their stay here contribute to reflections on their identities and citizenship? This seminar will feature six of HKIEd’s English Teaching Assistants sharing their reflections on these and other related questions.
