His research focuses on young people's interactions with electronic media, and on media education. He is currently working on two major research projects, about the everyday use of video camcorders, and about the role of the internet in young people’s civic participation. His most recent books are Beyond Technology: Children's Learning in the Age of Digital Culture (Polity, 2007); Global Children, Global Media; Migration, Media and Childhood (with Liesbeth de Block, Palgrave, 2007) and Youth, Identity and Digital Media (edited, MIT Press, 2008).

Abstract :The media are often seen as the cause of young people’s disaffection from political and civic action – and yet also as offering a potential solution to the problem. This presentation will draw on two empirically-focused research projects: the first, undertaken almost ten years ago, looked at the role of television in children’s understanding of social and political issues; while the second, currently under way, looks at the role of the internet in promoting civic participation among young people. The presentation will consider some of the changes that are entailed in the shift from ‘old’ media to ‘new’ media, and some of the continuities at stake; and it will consider the broader implications of this work for thinking about citizenship and learning.
