Abstract: In this presentation Prof. Grossman offers a framework under which citizenship educators and advocates of inclusion can share a common agenda of seeking socially just and democratic schools. In an increasingly globalized world societies are increasingly faced with the challenge to recognize and/or integrate diverse groups into the polity. This raises the question of whether the norms built into the educational fabric of schools are compatible with the promotion of greater social equality. The stakes are high. Without citizenship education that focuses on justice and social equality, we face the prospect of becoming a world of economically developed and technically competent people who have lost, or who have never gained, the ability to be citizens able to reason cross-culturally, think critically, to cooperate on problems with people very different from ourselves.
