Protozoan

A large number of protozoan species exist in biological treatment systems.

In biological treatment processes, protozoa plays an important role by feeding on and reducing the numbers of bacteria which degrade the contaminants in the sewage.

Biodegradation

A biodegradable substance is one that can be reduced to carbon dioxide and water by microbes.

Bioremediation

Bioremediation refers to the use of microbes to render hazardous wastes into non-hazardous or less hazardous.

The basic principle: to optimise the environmental conditions so that microbial biodegradation can occur rapidly and more completely.

Sewage Treatment Procedures

Different countries have different ways of biological disposal of organic wastes.

The wastewater or the sewage is digested by microbes in the biological treatment tank.

Types of Sewage Treatment Facilities in Hong Kong

This process is sometimes called aerobic biological treatment or aeration, because oxygen is involved. In this tank the organic matter in the sewage is oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. The remainder is converted by microbes to secondary sludge.
