Applications : Transgenic Animals
Increase the Yield of Milk
Bovine somatotropin (BST), also known as bovine growth hormone (BGH), is a natural protein produced by the pituitary gland of cattles.
Biotechnology enables scientists to produce a recombinant form of this protein called rBST.
The mammary glands of such dairy cows take in more nutrients from blood and produce more milk.
The rBST increases cows' milk yield by up to 20 percent.

The new transgenic pigs carry the gene for insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I).
The scientists injected the IGF-I gene into pig embryos soon after fertilization, producing the IGF-I transgenic pigs.
Scientists found that the IGF-I transgene could help reducing carcass fat and boosting lean body mass in transgenic pigs.
These transgenic pigs, with lean pork, would be a favor for many consumers in the market.
