APCLC-EPL Webinar:
Leading School Innovation in Times of Emergency

The education community has been facing unprecedented challenge and disruption caused by the Covid-19 outbreak. To support schools and education professionals, the Department of Education Policy and Leadership (EPL), in collaboration with The Joseph Lau Luen Hung Charitable Trust Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change (APCLC), invites your participation in a webinar that will share insight on how the current challenge can stimulate organizational and professional practices for educational improvement. This forum will facilitate discussions on innovation from the perspectives of leadership, professional learning community and policy.

  This section considers the potential impact of crises on leadership and innovation. We propose that unexpected challenges can push us to act in new ways by asking: when meaningful practices flood our schools and lead to improvement, can we return easily to the previous ways? To follow, we clarify teacher innovation and explain an emerging and exciting process to collectively applying novel, useful ideas in any area of school life, and conclude by considering leadership strategies for sustaining successful new practices and innovations in schools.

  School suspension has the potential to challenge and inspire teachers’ understanding of professional learning. In this session, we illustrate how a professional learning community can contribute to teacher innovation in this challenging period. We explore how teachers can work together to build a shareable and storable knowledge base and share some illustrative examples from Shanghai. We then show a knowledge management toolkit that we have developed to support teachers in reaching and assessing their school-based management and professional standards targets.

  Crises disrupt familiar structures, rules and practices—the grammar of schooling—often taken for granted when conceiving potential innovations. The current emergency has brought to the surface tensions that affect students, teachers, parents and schools. Short-term measures may address these, but innovations in the best interests of students call upon a professional commitment to re-examine school and government policies to facilitate deep and sustainable change. Accordingly, we explore the grammar of schooling that influences teacher well-being, community and family support, diversity and inclusion, and stakeholder collaboration.
