Invited Presentation at the ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK and the HEAD Foundation

Prof. Allan Walker (Joseph Lau Chair Professor of International Educational Leadership, Director of APCLC and Dean of FEHD) is invited to give presentation to mid-level officials and experts from Asian / ASEAN countries this summer so that they can develop a better understanding about key features behind school effectiveness benchmarking and the monitoring of school performance. This enhanced understanding would then be a basis of strengthening quality and improvement of their own national student assessment systems.

Prof. Walker’s presentation “Successful Schooling: Leading Strategically, Preparing Sensibly” stresses the importance of school leaders thinking and acting strategically; and of education agencies instituting development systems and structures which best prepare leaders to make a difference. The presentation has three parts. The first part reinforces the importance of strategic leadership to successful school change. The second part suggests seven key principles of strategic leadership. These include the importance of leaders being futures oriented and evidence based, opening new horizons, getting things done, making good partners, keeping themselves fit to lead and focusing on doing the ‘next’ right thing. The third section emphasizes the importance of effective professional development to support strategic leadership and draws a number of key lessons from a recent study which set out to identify common patterns from five world-class leader development systems.
