Shanghai has attracted the international attention for its 2009 and 2012 PISA successes.  Among other things, the success is often attributed to its well-established teacher development system. The TALIS (Teaching and Learning International Survey) 2013-2014 shows:

Shanghai displays above-average access and participation in mentoring programmes.
Teachers in Shanghai are more likely to participate in classroom observation and collaborative professional development.
School principals seem well-prepared for their tasks in Shanghai, with more than one third of their time devoted to curriculum and teaching.

The APCLC, in collaboration with the EPL Department of the EdUHK, thus have invited school principal and backbone (gugan) teacher from Shanghai to share their experiences. These invited practitioners and HK researchers will explore and discuss the practices and implications of leading teacher professional development on the morning of May 26, 2017 (Friday) at YMCA of Hong Kong. At the Forum, 4 key questions will be discussed:

What is the key lesson that can be drawn from the teacher development practices in Shanghai?
What is the trajectory from a novice to a backbone teacher and how can the backbone teachers extend their expertise to others?
What is the role of school principalship in promoting teacher development in Shanghai?
How shall we understand Shanghai’s education success? What are the implications for Hong Kong?
