On 27 May 2016, amid great joy and excitement, the University community celebrated the birth of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), upon publication in the Government Gazette of the HKIEd (Amendment) Ordinance 2016. This is a date of great signi cance for EdUHK as much as it is for me, having been proudly associated with the then Institute since 2002, rst as a member, then Treasurer and now Chairman of the Council.
In each of my appointments on the Council, my passion to serve never wavered, and was underpinned by the consistent dream of attaining the university title that this excellent institution rightfully deserved. On this important journey, I was most privileged to have worked
with highly committed members of staff, students and alumni as
well as our many trusted friends and supporters who walked with
us in overcoming one challenge after another along the way. Our persistence, determination and hard work allowed us to realise the vision of founding Council Chairman, Dr Simon Ip, three years ahead of his predicted timeline for HKIEd to become a university of education.
Embracing our distinctive vision and mission, it is my rm belief that EdUHK is poised to become an important hub of teacher education and an outstanding research centre in Greater China and Asia. At the same time, with the dedication of the University community, and the encouragement and continued support of our partners, friends and stakeholders, I have every con dence that EdUHK, born out of the historical legacy of the Institute and its predecessor Colleges of Education, will grow by leaps and bounds, and become a thought leader and agenda setter in the eld of education.
