Master of Arts in Global Histories of Education [MAGHE]
Preface
How has formal schooling become a shared experience of all children all over the world? How have technologies transformed education? Which role have international organisations played in shaping educational policies? How have education systems in China and other Asian countries become the highest performing in the world?
If you are interested in these and related questions, the Master of Arts in Global Histories of Education (MAGHE) is your choice! History of education is an exciting discipline that investigates how education developed over time. It thereby enables you to better understand the education systems of today.
MAGHE is unique because it combines the disciplines of history, history of education and present-focused educational sciences. It puts an emphasis on the modern period since the twentieth century. MAGHE is also unique because it concentrates on China and Asia in a global context.
The programme broadens your professional portfolio as an educator or in related occupations. MAGHE also prepares you for taking up doctoral studies in either education or history.

Words from Alumni
Led by professors from different fields of study, we happily travelled through an international space where history and the future intersect.
Throughout the year, I have always felt lucky to have had the opportunity to join the MAGHE family and to be exposed to a wonderful new world. Led by professors from different fields of study, we happily travelled through an international space where history and the future intersect. From global history to regional history, from education itself to the connection between education and all parts of society, we looked at education through the lens of history and development, exploring the value and possibilities of applying the history of education to modern and globalised education. In my communication with my classmates and teachers, I gradually learned to look at the objects of study with a critical and holistic view, giving me more room for exploration. In addition, I learned a lot from the research projects and presented on topics that interested me with the help of Dr Klaus Dittrich, for which I am very grateful. All in all, I love MAGHE!
I learned how the city has changed and the development of education through the buildings. It turned out that education is not only on the campus, “a flower is a world, a leaf is a bodhi.” This is what the Humanities is all about.
A year spent studying in Hong Kong takes a lifetime to miss.” As I am about to leave Hong Kong, I feel this statement is so true. I will miss my classmates, teachers, campus, and youth that will never return.
Hong Kong is a modern city, but the landscape is gorgeous, especially at The Education University of Hong Kong. With its small bridges and winding paths, it could not be a better environment for students in the Faculty of Humanities to dive into their studies and be a student. Two lessons profoundly impacted me, one was when Prof Matthew Doran took us on a hike from the campus to the seaside park, and I saw the sunset, egrets, and phoenix flowers. It was a lesson on technology and education. Yet, I felt the shock of nature and the charm of humanities. Another lesson was an urban expedition led by Prof Wang Meng. I learned how the city has changed and the development of education through the buildings. It turned out that education is not only on the campus, “a flower is a world, a leaf is a bodhi.” This is what the Humanities is all about, and I will carry wisdom, gratitude, and courage from The Education University of Hong Kong into the world and the future.
MAGHE has opened the door of a research hall for me, allowing me to enter the path of future exploration in the field of education and history.
It is a great honour to be a student of the MAGHE programme at The Education University of Hong Kong. This programme combines a global historical perspective with pedagogy, giving us the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the relationship between education and social development.
Although my undergraduate major was not in education or history, the rich curriculum and professional guidance of my professors have opened my mind to a deeper analysis of the causes, processes and effects of historical events, especially as they relate to trends of change in the field of education.
MAGHE is like a "family" and our professors not only patiently explain knowledge and discuss problems with us, but also encourage and support us like friends. In the last lesson of each semester, we were all sad to leave and we held up our cell phones to take pictures and leave a good memory.
Through studying this major, I not only learned knowledge, but also chose a research project according to my interest. During this process, I received encouragement, guidance, and growth, and also gained the joy of exploration. The effort requires perseverance and calm. This is the most valuable thing I have learned.
In addition to my studies, FHM and MAGHE organised many worthwhile activities, such as the Global Histories of Education Dialogue, and EdUHK provided a wealth of extracurricular activities, such as the New Year's Concert, sports and foreign language classes, which allowed us to make surprising discoveries throughout our learning journey.
MAGHE has opened the door of a research hall for me, allowing me to enter the path of future exploration in the field of education and history. “The sun is shining again”, a quote from our professor, Dr Klaus Dittrich, who always inspired me to cherish every opportunity to try and grow, and to look forward to my future endeavours and progress in more research experiences.
The Master of Arts in Global Histories of Education not only gave me a macro perspective on education but also taught me to pay attention to neglected figures in history.
The Master of Arts in Global Histories of Education not only gave me a macro perspective on education but also taught me to pay attention to neglected figures in history. Our professional teachers have admirable academic abilities and care about students' learning. You can definitely find role models to learn in the classroom!
In addition, The Education University of Hong Kong provides students with many extracurricular activities. For example, Arthur Samy Language Learning Centre offers courses in learning English, Cantonese, and other languages. Studying and living in Hong Kong has given me the opportunity to experience new life and appreciate the beautiful natural scenery.
I hope everyone can gain knowledge and friendship in our beautiful campus.
Master of Arts in Global Histories of Education (MAGHE) gives us many possibilities to become teachers, historians, or educational researchers.

The programme is great. The course “Globalising History” taught by Dr Jason Petrulis was very interesting. It allowed us to learn about global history from micro-historical perspectives as small as a carpet or a wig. The course “The History of International Schooling in East Asia” conducted by Dr Klaus Dittrich deepened students' understanding of the topic in the form of student presentations and paper reflection. For the Research Project, I was very satisfied and impressed by Dr Hui Kwok-wai’s dedication to help me with the research topic I was interested in. We also had the opportunity to participate in many education and history-related seminars and exchange with other universities. Finally, every professor is very friendly, and they tried to remember everybody’s name and helped us with learning and living. All of these experiences have been worthwhile and meaningful. MAGHE helped me to achieve my goal of becoming a teacher, just as I had hoped.
If you asked me now if it is worth for this year of studies? I would answer firmly, it was well worth it.
I came to The Education University of Hong Kong in August 2022 to study the Master of Arts in Global Histories of Education. If you asked me now if it is worth for this year of studies? I would answer firmly, it was well worth it.
The professors in our programme are really friendly. They not only have strong academic background, but also treat us with great humility. Professors do their best to help us with all the academic questions even when they are really busy.
Furthermore, you can immerse yourself in this programme to improve your English skills. We have six foreign teachers from the US, UK and Germany, and two beautiful teachers who speak superb English. Our teachers encourage us to express our ideas and ask questions in class, and we exercise our English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This has played a decisive role in my English skills, and I can now communicate in English very confidently.
The programme leader often arranged activities on topics related to our major studies, such as the “Global Histories of Education Dialogue” which brought renowned scholars from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University. These activities facilitated a deeper connection with the discipline and gave us more contact with the outside world.
During this year of study, I have not only improved my academic skills, but also became more global and critical in my thinking when looking at a historical event, and this ability has greatly enhanced my thinking both in life and work. The overall atmosphere of our programme is very good. Everyone is very nice and I have made a lot of friends which is extremely valuable.
All in all, this year of study has been very impressive for me. I not only learnt a lot of transnational history and global education history, but also improved my English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and made many friendly friends.
