SEC awarded HK$22M funding to help special needs students

2019-01-16

The Department of Special Education and Counselling (SEC) has been awarded HK$22 million by the Education Bureau to support New-to-role Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCO) for Primary and Secondary Schools.

The Government pledged additional resources since 2017 for primary and secondary schools to hire Special Educational Needs Coordinators, or SENCOs, staff who promote integrated education by early identification, early intervention, whole school approach, home-school cooperation and cross-sector collaboration.

Over 720 SENCOs will take the course at EdUHK’s Department of Special Education and Counselling, the only body in Hong Kong equipped to run the three-year professional development programme.

Head of SEC and Project Principal Investigator Professor Hue Ming Tak said “Inclusive Education counts not only on SENCOs but the schools at large. Our training programme aims to help schools design innovative and strategic inclusive education plans for sustainable development.”

SEC Assistant Professor and Project Co-Investigator Dr Mavis He said “Our programme aims to foster a regional network of special education professionals that support schools and communities. We believe that by sharing their practices, schools can better serve their Special Needs students.”

As this project illustrates, FEHD aims to spread the latest and most effective techniques in inclusive education as widely as possible. We train SENCOs to take education-for-all to the NEXT LEVEL.
