This course develops students’ knowledge of Standard English grammar as a system and linguistic resources, and equips them with a good understanding of the structural properties of various grammatical subsystems and their functions. The course provides an introduction to basic modes of linguistic description from a functional and formal linguistic perspective asking students to find forms in authentic texts and to understand their reason for use. This course introduces key types of construction as a word and its morphemes, the phrase and the clause. To deepen students’ appreciation of considerable variation in English usages in different parts of the world, they will be exposed to, and guided to analyse, authentic texts, and to use corpus tools to investigate English grammar. |
