The culture-specific rules of the use of languages such as communicative competence, politeness strategies, address terms, routine greetings, power balance, taboo and euphemism will be discussed. The course also introduces concepts of communication strategies in different cultures, and features of miscommunication as a result of cultural differences. It includes examination of different text genres in the field of arts and culture, such as literature, visual arts, performing arts, music and cinema. Ample practice opportunities will be provided for students to apply their theoretical knowledge in translation in specific contexts.
