UNDERSTANDING LINGUISTIC AND RELATED BARRIERS THROUGH SERVICES TO SOCIALLY DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN
Module Synopsis
單元概要
This CSL course aims to extend students’ learning experience beyond traditional classroom-based curriculum by developing their sense of responsibility and interpersonal skills, and engaging them to provide services to socially disadvantaged children in Hong Kong. Students will first participate in preparatory sessions to gain an understanding of the concepts and theoretical backgrounds of service-learning and its relationship to whole person development in higher education. Different modes of service provisions for socially disadvantaged children will also be introduced. The nature of direct services covers a number of domains and subject areas such as tutorial groups (primary and secondary levels), English study groups, Chinese oral skills training and various activities for socially disadvantaged children. By participating in these direct services, students will learn to understand the linguistic performance among these disadvantaged children and how it may affect their school performance and communication in daily life. Most of the activities take place in weekday late afternoons and evenings, as well as Saturdays. The service centres are located at Mongkok, North Point, Kwai Chung and Tsz Wan Shan. Details on the time and service locations will be announced in the departmental website. After the completion of services, students will conduct presentations and structured reflection on the experiences of service-learning and how these experiences benefit their own personal development. Preliminary and tentative information of the service activities can be found at the website of the Department of Linguistics & Modern Language Studies (under the COURSES tab): http://www.ied.edu.hk/lml
