Cantonese for Non-Chinese Speakers

1. Synopsis 

This is a course for students who have no knowledge of Cantonese. At beginner level, this course aims at developing elementary competence in Cantonese focusing on oral skills, as well as introducing Cantonese culture. Students will be familiarized with basic Chinese characters, useful vocabulary and daily expressions. 

 

 

2. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) 

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 

CILO1	demonstrate the knowledge of the Cantonese phonetic system;
CILO2	recognize basic Chinese characters;
CILO3	communicate using basic expressions in Cantonese;
CILO4	understand Cantonese-specific cultural elements in communication;
CILO5	develop proficiency in Cantonese with self-access learning materials.
